Vintage Car Rants

What's it all about?

rants about some vintage car owners and the misery of living with Old cars.

Not my Work at Auction.

Folk Posted on Wed, October 14, 2020 13:28:10

Well I do say “How do you know if an auctioneer is lying?? easy his lips are moving.”

Do not believe for one second that the Riley Brooklands Special for sale at Bonhams 17-10-2020 was Professionally Restored by Brooklands EngineCraft at any time.

I did sell a pile of poo, before I was Brooklands EngineCraft to a guy as a rolling chassis. It had a poor quality Mike Holden chassis and an as found engine and box sold to me as rebuilt by a typical Riley Register guy ( no expense incurred) In fact it had a Merlin idler gear in the worn out timing gear set, so the oil pump could never of worked. It did have new Metalled bearings and I stuffed in an aluminium idler and eccentric so it would have oil pressure. All the rest of the engine was just old used Riley bits….Gearbox as a mess, but was told rebuilt…again no expense uncured…apart from all the welding to it, that’s why it’s red!

The Chassis went to Brooklands BodyCraft and that was the last I saw of it. Darren made a body and sent it on it’s way.

I have told them to remove my name from adverts, but I am sorry to inform you that as of 12 today 14-10, nothing has happened on line…funny I can alter my adverts immediately on line….they said it take 24 hours.

Wishing him every success for the future.

One we made earlier, Scott’s wiring job.

When a new owner took over a business next door to me, I tried to be helpful.
As per normal with poor people, greed is his drive and with a sense that he should be able to do as he pleases he soon pissed me off.
We have a long track to our house and on then to his site. Alongside this in the 70’s we laid a parking area for ourselves, to save blocking the track. On this My boy’s caravan lives….well as with many folk caravans get right up this new guy’s nose and over it was were we fell out. He had the cheek to say he didn’t mind us parking our cars there…like he has the fu*king right to stop us….but we should move the caravan out to a secluded spot out of sight to, suit him and,” make the driveway look smart”
I don’t think he is expecting what this has prompted from me this weekend….now in our garden alongside the track I have placed a tatty old van I bought…JUST TO PISS HIM OFF!!!! He now has to look at every time he drives up or down to his site.

The thing is I am luckier than him, as I don’t live next door to ME!

Rant!

What is it with people, always looking for others to carry the can for them.
They buy old Vintage cars, expecting New BMW like reliability, from 90 year old parts.

Then when they don’t get what they thought they would get, blame other’s for their stupidity of getting into a field they know not a bloody thing about, just to pose down the pub to their mates.

These cars are not an investment, they are a disaster waiting to happen. If you can’t afford to set fire to the cost of buying and maintaining one, keep well away.

Many of them are, in reality now, not worth fixing. If you have a Vintage or PVT saloon of the Cooking variety…and you can’t do all the work yourself, you have a black hole of a money pit opening before you.

A lovely little Riley Monaco went through Chippenham Auctions at a price of £8,500…no one wanted to pay more….The market for this type of car has gone. Now, if the wrong guy got hold of it, thinking “I got a bargain here” and “I can make some money” He would be in for a real shock if the engine gave out and had to pay to fix it. He would be lucky to get it done for less than the car cost him, and that would be with old parts which might fail yet again….New every thing would cost more like £10/12k
When done, the car is still only worth the hammer price paid…..the market for cooking is dead, along with most of the folk who loved these motors.
No young shaver wants “cooking saloons”, if we are lucky they just might want Sports Specials. But more likely to buy hot hatches or what ever is in Vogue at the minute.

More and more I hear disappointed voices on the phone, when given a realist price to fix these things.

Imagine if they went to the Big Boys who say, “open your wallet and repeat after me”
“Help yourself”

Brand types

Folk Posted on Sat, April 18, 2015 08:06:33

I have found very much over the, too many, years that different Marques attract different types of folk.
Riley types are, in the main, SOUND!, altogether nice folk. The few that are not, really want the other Marque that their “assholeyness”, denotes but can’t afford….this also goes for the trade side of things.
AC it seems to me attract, a breed of trade suppliers that surpass the traditional “Back street Cowboys” to a new level of deceit that is near unbelievable. Owners seem to be, in general, good guys.
I have found that in having to help out many hapless AC owners, most “AC traders” are lairs and conscienceless crooks. They pretend to be experts in all fields, when all they do is leach off others….in the real world like the saying goes “those that can’t, teach”. They lie through their teeth, even to themselves, about any thing to win a pound extra out of folk.
Black is white in their world, unless black gets them another pound! Mammon is more important too them than anything else in this world, and they will lie and cheat to get it however they can. Evolution has made AC owners their pray animal for some reason? Like lambs to the slaughter they merrily open their wallets and say “help your self”, so I suppose that has what singled them out from the herd.
Just a cautionary note to all AC owners to beware the spouter of bollocks that you come into contact with when in “Vintage car Hell” That hand extended is not to grab yours as you drown, this to lift your wallet and then watch you go under without trace! Your cries unheeded.

Invicta…as a Marque are, near beyond belief, Fine motor cars…..There is a crook that swims in this pool that far and away surpass all others on the “Car crook wall of infamy” Michael Bristow. He is the most despicable sociopath one could never wish to meet again, and I will happily meet him in court if he wishes to sue me for libel, for the truth is not libelous in any way. His many court appearances are just the tip of the iceberg, as most folk burned by him can not bring themselves to go that way…like many victims, too ashamed to tell anyone how foolish they have been…….

Mamon

Have you ever noticed how these days the question always asked is “what’s it worth”when cornered by the public ( vintage buffs alike).
My first question has always been “how fast does it go!”
What’s this obsession all about?
Next thing I see the Antiques roadshow doing is featuring folk with suitcases full of cash and everyone smiling stupidly when large numbers are given for how much is in the case.

Customers

Folk Posted on Sat, October 18, 2014 06:26:55

Winter is now bearing down upon us, a time of little vintage car road use. Time to address all those niggles that have raised their heads this last summer.

Well experience tells us that most customers will wait till about March to ask for the jobs to be done for Spring!

Experts

Folk Posted on Wed, October 15, 2014 07:54:37

Why is it that the Marque “Experts” seem always to be so wrong, IMHO….especially when passing judgment on “engineering work.
They forget/newer even knew that in the 20’s standardisation was not a normal production technique….Scott Motorcycle’s trade mark incorporates a gap gauge to make big of the fact they were they did just this.
Where did the word “Fitter” come from….obvious… he was the guy who had to “fit” parts together.
If one makes parts for these experts too big it is “Scrap”as sloppy.. too small wrong again…..you just can’t win with this type of clown….every thing in their world is black and white and they are always right.
What’s the saying……those who can’t — teach!
