Covid19

Ponderings Posted on Wed, March 18, 2020 06:39:18

Big fear worldwide, this little bugger. Is it the end of Vintage motor cars? With the demographic of those at most risk being those who are interested in Pre War cars, could this spell the end of the Dinosaurs that are us! Not that we would be classed as Velociraptor, more like Headupthearsaurus.

Headupthearsaurus: Ponderous bipedal through back, having only retrospective vision and short attention sp….. where was I?

Hoping we all come out the other side of this pandemic…..wishing you all good luck.

Something New to play with while I antisocialise, self isolate.

What Fun!

Brooklands Special

Ponderings Posted on Sat, May 25, 2019 05:30:56

We are on a mission to build a rolling chassis for a German customer at the moment. Will be interesting to see how it goes when we are at hand over point. I never take deposits, that’s way the “Wrong Special” became mine as the guy welched on the deal at the finish.
So let’s see if the same happens again. Kinda hope ’twill as we can easily finish to complete car and get much more out of the deal.
Still it is on the slipway now, engine near done, gearbox finished.

Bugger!

Recently had a clog up inside, heart that is…..although many of my ex-wifes would say I don’t have one!
Now need to grow 3 inch in hight to get body mass in line with Government Guide lines.
Gods make ” time of the Essence” wake up, has focused the mind on all the crap I have just got to get sorted out!
Thus selling “The Wrong Special” and getting the “Right Stuff” on the slipway.
F.T.D. here we come!

12 & 14/6

Ponderings Posted on Sun, November 29, 2015 07:19:29

Have been asked about replacing a 12/4 with original type 6 cylinder engine recently, prompted following reply:

Things to consider are gearbox, clutch, and why change.

Things to check are cracks around centre main, cracks on sides and back of water jacket and cracks around cam follower holes inside and on top face studs to followers and waterways. Also that all main carriers are correct type for the block/oil ways. Size of cranks and soundness there of, rods probably not worth reusing… cams likely same.. Starter motor, Dynamo, inlet manifold, water pump and dissy?

Check head very carefully to see all the oil /water holes match up…..this is a minefield on Riley six cylinder engines.

Rebuild costs hard to quote, but beware of “New” Folk in market place who appear to be singing from the Hymn sheet of Adam and the Ants……
“Stand and deliver”…..after the event and now even, before.

We would recommend new rods on shells, as rods are the weak point of the assembly…plumbing in of modern oil filler. If using a Pre selector box, we do make a flywheel to take a 12/4 2nd type clutch as the original type is more like a Claymore mine than a clutch….Not sure if there are any bell housing available anywhere! Several needed in the last couple of years following explosions. Manual All helical box coming into stock soon, can supply lightweight flywheel and Borg&Beck clutch.

Main thing to remember is to join the 6 cylinder Riley club there is an oath/joining ceremony to preform :

Open your wallet and say after me “Help yourself”

Done!

Ponderings Posted on Sun, March 22, 2015 07:13:24

Have just stripped an AC Cat Paw engine that was rebuilt some years back for a previous owner….had just to have liners reset as they had dropped.
The engine has a Dunn water jacket replacement, so I determined to completely strip and acid clean before rebuilding, as any faults here would bite us in the ass when we run it up after rebuild.
Best decision ever! Block cracked, and the front water channel is rotted out plus weaken beyond belief….and to add to the insult, crank and rods need re-metal and are 0.050″ down now! bore 0.008″ over and tappered, pistons old used with “Cord” rings…still dropped under own weight…..When the now owner shock hands on the deal and said “Done” the seller should have replied …”You certainly have been!!!!”

Here we go!

Ponderings Posted on Sun, March 08, 2015 11:55:54

Well the season is upon us once again….Dragged the Wrong Special out. Taken off uprated fuel pump and gone back to US. Booked setting up on rolling road to get sorted out (I hope) after last seasons decision to up head spec and gas follow….now runs OFF!
Hope to have it on song soon.
